Lazy days and weekends were made for a country place like this one. Days spent prowling the woods on foot or on horseback, visiting the nearby lake, or simply enjoying the fabulous mountain view-this was the vision that moved designer Julie Turcotte and her family to buy this property on Lake Memphremagog five years ago, along with its rather decrepit stone house.
If the property promised retreat from the grind of the city, however, the house posed a challenge. It had been built in the 1970s, but had not been well maintained in recent years, with the result that the walls were rotting. On the main floor, the kitchen, living room and dining room were a series of low-ceilinged, closed-in rooms-cut off from the outdoor life the home's owners were there to enjoy.
Julie pictured a “simple, easy, Zen-ish ambience” for the house: low-key spaces that are a backdrop to views of the outdoors, rugged oversized furniture on which kids feel at home and friends of all ages can put up their feet, a bath of natural light spilling in through every opening. She also wanted to recreate some of the easy elegance of the beautiful old homes she's visited on trips to the south of France.
